What is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy or Cbt?
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is an approach to counseling that has evolved over the past few decades. It was developed by Aaron Beck and expanded by Albert Ellis. Recently, it has attracted a attention in the popular press as an empirically validated treatment for depression, anxiety, and a wide variety of problems.
How Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) work?
The basic theory behind Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is that emotions are created and intensified by hidden core beliefs. These beliefs can be about you, situations in your life, or about others. They are often inaccurate and can be difficult to identify on our own. Like a fish that does not realize that it is swimming in water, we can sometimes mistake our beliefs for reality because we lack perspective. It is the therapist’s job to help you identify these beliefs and re-evaluate their accuracy.
The cognitive behavioral therapy approach also values action. The idea of acting “as if” or “behaving your way to success” , are perfect examples of the type of advice that a cbt therapist might offer
